Stand-Up Comedy

I have a passion to help people laugh more and stress less, because our world has a way of keeping us living on the edge of worry, fear, and depression.

The Bible offers us an antidote for the stress of life, and that is God’s gift of laughter! Proverbs 17:22 says, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”

Whether it’s work stress, relationship tensions, financial fears, or just plain-old singing the blues, God gave us laughter to grease those sticky wheels that can quickly bring our happiness to a halt!

I give him a 10 out of 10!!”

Clean Comedy…

I strive to provide clean comedy, avoid negative slams, no dark or blue material, and never foul language (I am an ordained minister). I’m conscience of age-appropriate humor for families and mixed audiences of various political, religious, and social backgrounds.

In my presentations, I draw upon the humorous stories and funny experiences from my own life by sharing my own life of stress through the funny stories of growing-up in the small Northeast town of Rossford, Ohio, serving as a Yankee pastor of a deep South family led church in South Carolina, and being a hospital chaplain in Mobile, Alabama.

Love, Marriage, & Parenting…

My comedy of mixed one-liners and stories centers on the issues of love, relationships, marriage, parenting, weddings gone bad, and my own experience in this world of love and romance. It’s an ideal theme for any general audience, but is always great for Valentine Banquets, Marriage Conferences, or gatherings relating to relationship enrichment.

Stress, Life, & Weight Loss…

Another theme in my comedy is my own hilarious perspectives of coming to terms with own need for stress relief as a hospital chaplain working with patients of hurricane Katrina, losing over 100 pounds, 14 belt loops, and all my wardrobe, and stories of growing up in the stress of small Yankee town followed by my unsuccessful pursuit of a stress-less life in church ministry in Southern world of South Carolina!

Even though I will deal with the real issues of my own obesity, through some personal funny stories and perspectives, I am always conscience of not twisting something to cause an audience member who may be struggling with weight loss to feel uncomfortable.

Church & Ministry Stories…

As a kid growing up near Toledo, Ohio, I thought George Carlin and Cheech and Chong were the best of the comedy world, until my life direction changed and I headed to seminary in the South to become a minister…which is where I was introduced to Jerry Clower when he came to campus for a comedy show.

I found Jerry Clower’s stories and style of unfolding humor, using just his mic and memory, to be absolutely captivating. At the time, I excelled in my public speaking and homiletic classes, even winning awards, but Jerry Clower presented to me a talent and style of comedy that amazed me and left me wondering if I could ever reach that standard of story telling comedy and speaking skill.

Several years after that I joined Toastmasters International and was asked to compete in a humorous speaking contest, which I did and won awards in several competitions up to the state level. I have since performed stand-up comedy for churches and corporate conferences, but I’ve realized that I have gotten old enough to have my own experiences of humor and stories, and the time has come for me to take up that “Jerry Clower” challenge that has taunted my “want-to” for so long. Please visit my Meet the Yorkfellows page to learn more!

F.A.Q. On Comedy…

I usually get 3 questions about my speaking services, that I’ll answer here:

1) How long do you speak or perform? I have enough material to sit on a stool and entertain for hours! However, I know that programs and events have time limits and I will gladly fit into those time frames. They typical presentation request is 30 minutes, which can be ideal following a banquet meal or other event programs.

However, I can and frequently do 45 – 60 minutes performances, because when dynamic is the comedian warm-up factor. Sometimes that 20 – 30 minute mark is the build-up to the peak, and everything after that is the icing on the cake where both the comedian and the audience are dancing well together.

It does depend on the group, the purpose of the event, and some other things, so please ask me and we can work on your objectives for the entertainment, together.

2) How much do you charge for speaking? I go by honorariums or love-offerings, and have resisted setting hard and fast fees, because I enjoy seeing this as part of my ministry. I realize that I’m also asked, What kind of honorariums do others give you? The answer to that is anywhere from $200 to $800 – with $500 being a typical fee – but let’s talk.

For locations over a three hour drive from Mobile, Alabama, I’m usually extended overnight lodging at an area hotel (however, I frequently am OK with driving four or five hours to meet other appointments.

3) How do we book you for our event? First, visit the Contact Me page and use theQuick Question Form to check my availability and share just a little bit about the event and your audience. If I’m available and you’d like to book me, I’ll simply ask you to confirm that by email. Of course, if you have any questions, please call or email me!
