Humorous Storytelling

When of my favorite forms of comedy is humorous storytelling.

As a kid growing up near Toledo, Ohio, I thought George Carlin and Cheech and Chong were the best of the comedy world, until my life direction changed and I headed to seminary in the South to become a minister…which is where I was introduced to Jerry Clower when he came to campus for a comedy show.

I found Jerry Clower’s stories and style of unfolding humor, using just his mic and memory, to be absolutely captivating. At the time, I excelled in my public speaking and homiletic classes, even winning awards, but Jerry Clower presented to me a talent and style of comedy that amazed me and left me wondering if I could ever reach that standard of story telling comedy and speaking skill.

Several years after that I joined Toastmasters International and was asked to compete in a humorous speaking contest, which I did and won awards in several competitions up to the state level. I have since performed stand-up comedy for churches and corporate conferences, but I’ve realized that I have gotten old enough to have my own experiences of humor and stories, and the time has come for me to take up that “Jerry Clower” challenge that has taunted my “want-to” for so long.

THE YORKFELLOWS…

I love The Yorkfellow’s stories are based on a real family and some real experiences of my introduction as a Yankee pastor in the Southern world of a family-led church.

Like Jerry Clower’s Ledbetter family stories, the Yorkfellow’s give me a vehicle to share the hilarious, but sometimes personal stories of church events and parishioners of my life without identity or embarrassment.

These funny and hilarious stories are about the Yorkfellow’s family, York Community Church, and Bro. Newell, the former pastor of York Community Church who felt called to start The Original Holy End-Time Church of the Believer’s Kingdom to Come in his peach orchard shed.

The Yorkfellow’s family is led by the matriarch, Ma Yorkfellow and her seven adult children, who are listed here from oldest to youngest:

  1. Leroy (Charlene; son Junior, Leroy is the head deacon)
  2. Rachel (Walter, the town insurance agent)
  3. Healy (the town Police Chief)
  4. Danielle (the “first twin”)
  5. Camille (the “second twin”)
  6. Merrill (the town family physician)
  7. Tad (short for Tadacious)

Some of my Yorkfellow’s stories include…

  • “Ma Yorkfellow’s and the Harley”
  • “Leroy and the Debate”
  • “Bro. Newell and Pa’s Sleeping Cure”
  • “Pa Yorkfellow and Bro. Newell’s Tobacco Cure”
  • “Junior at the Wedding”
  • “Walter and the Car Accident”
  • “Walter Goes to Las Vegas Convention”
  • “Walter’s Seeing-Eye Dog and the Fancy Hotel”
  • “Officer Healy and Bro. Newell”
  • “Bro. Newell and the Pink Cadillac Prayer”
  • “Bro. Newell and the Sky Writer”
  • “Rachel Flushed the Visa”
  • “Healy and the U.S. Marines”
  • “Ma Yorkfellow’s Sausage Lasagna and the Vegetarian Preacher”
  • “Dr. Merrill and 91 year old Millionaire”
  • “Dr. Merrill makes a House Call”
  • “Dr. Merrill and the Veterinarian Phone Number”
  • “Tad Hides the Boonsfarm from Ma”
  • “Tad Stops at the New Orleans Cafe”
  • “Leroy, Barbie, and the BMW”
  • “Ma Stops the House Burglar”
  • “The Tobacco-Free Revival”…and more!

Banquet/Event Comedy Q & A…

If you have any questions about my comedy or presentations or scheduling me, please visit my Contact Me page.

I usually get 3 questions about my speaking services, that I’ll answer here:

1) How long do you speak or perform? I have enough material to sit on a stool and entertain for hours! However, I know that programs and events have time limits and I will gladly fit into those time frames. They typical presentation request is 30 minutes, which can be ideal following a banquet meal or other event programs.

2) How much do you charge for speaking? I go by honorariums or love-offerings, and have resisted setting hard and fast fees, because I enjoy seeing this as part of my ministry. I realize that I’m also asked, What kind of honorariums do others give you? The answer to that is anywhere from $200 to $500, and for locations over a three hour drive from Mobile, Alabama, I’m usually extended overnight lodging at an area hotel (however, I frequently am OK with driving four or five hours to meet other appointments.

3) How do we book you for our event? First, visit the Contact Me page and use the“Quick Question Form” to check my availability and share just a little bit about the event and your audience. If I’m available and you’d like to book me, I’ll simply ask you to confirm that by email. Of course, if you have any questions, please call or email me!
