You have some choices for your wedding vows, and here they are:
Traditional Vows – 9 out of 10 weddings choose the traditional vows and about the same choose to simply say “I do.” However, if you wish to recite them to each other just let me know and that can be done, too. I do not use the word “obey” unless you request that I do. Some Christian traditions want that included for the bride and I will be more than happy to do that, just let me know.
Here is what I say:
Do you __________, take __________,
to be your lawfully wedded (wife/husband),
to have and to hold from this day forward,
for better or for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish;
to be faithfully yours,
as long as you both shall live?
Your Own Vows – You can write your own vows or use something you find already written that you like. There is a few different ways you can do your own vows. You can simply write them down and read them to each other at the time of the ceremony or if you want me to use them for you both to recite after me. You can also write your own and still have me do the traditional vows.
Please visit my Writing Your Vows page for additional help and ideas.
Dr. Seuss Vows – Here is a funny one for you. I’ve put this together many years ago for a bride, who happened to also be a nurse at the hospital I worked at as a chaplain, by way of a joke. They didn’t use actually use it, but a few other couples have. It kind of fits better with a non-traditional comedy format wedding, because the sing-song verses can seem a little odd in the flow of a traditional ceremony.
Do you ____________, take ____________,
to be your lawfully wedded (wife/husband)
to have and to hold to love all your life?
will you love through the good and even the bad?
will you love though you may be happy or sad?
will you love when their rich or stuck in a deficit?
will you love when their sick or physically fit?
will you love till the end,
will you love your whole life long with all of your heart?
will you love, will you love (her/him) till death do you part?
