Each year I will get calls from couples who surprisingly find the Alabama courthouse closed and unable to get their marriage license, and here is why…
Alabama has three state holidays that acknowledge the state’s Confederate history and on these days you will find the Alabama courthouse closed:
- General Robert E. Lee’s birthday, on the third Monday in January
- Confederate Memorial Day on the fourth Monday in April
- Jefferson Davis’ birthday on June 3.
…and, while it’s not a Confederate Holiday, you will find that Alabama law also recognizes Mardi Gras as a holiday in Mobile and Baldwin Counties ordering all state offices closed on Mardi Gras.
Mississippi has the same holiday’s with the exception of Jefferson Davis’ birthday being celebrated on Memorial Day. Florida has no Confederate Holidays.
