In recent years I have been going through a theological journey and have been deeply studying the questionable issues in Dispensationalism and Historicism views of eschatology.

My own ministerial education has been in the Historicism school of eschatology but I have not been one to make an issue of those who hold to a Dispensationalism school of thought. For some reason I haven’t ran into pre-trib people ridiculing post-trib people, it has always been the post-trib that seem to want to make it an issue against pre-trib.

I have always felt that I have understood the arguments for the pre-trib rapture, the subsequent 7-year tribulation, and the separate event of the second coming. My position really was a “pre-trib, post-trib, all-trib works out in the end” kind of attitude. When I first entered pastoral ministry it became clear that most of us are more concerned with surviving the week and don’t have enough theological bandwidth to worry about the details of end-time tribulation.

In 2016 I attended a Calvary Chapel pastors meeting as an invited guest, and when the speaker said that it was essential to have a firm pre-tribulation theology, I began mauling that over in my mind and not too happily, either.

When I arrived back home I did some serious study on the pre-trib and post-trib positions, but for whatever reason I didn’t pursue a deeper study into some of the issues that were left unanswered.

Later that year our church where I serve as pastor was scheduled to go through the book of Revelation, verse by verse, and I decided that as I taught through it I would mainly rely on respected theologians and commentators who held a pre-trib position. Most of our membership at that time held to a pre-trib position.

I was already familiar with the Historicism interpretations of Daniel and Revelation so I determined to challenge myself by testing the Dispensationalism view and relying on such sources as Walvoord and others from that tradition.

Surprisingly, I found that when I started from the pre-trib and dispensationism perspective it made sense. The pieces fit better and when we were finished with the Revelation teaching series I was left with only a few unanswered questions.
