Including Communion in Wedding Ceremony
I am an advocate for including a simple Christian communion service into a wedding ceremony, even for a beach wedding. To me, communion is an ideal way to bring a Christian element into the start of a marriage.
If your religious tradition sees the communion service as a symbolic remembrance of the life of Christ as Savior and soon returning King, like most Baptist or Evangelical churches do, than this is something that will fit fine.
If your religious tradition sees the communion service as a literal conversation into the actual blood and body of Christ, like Catholic or Lutheran churches, than this is something you may only want to do this within a church sanctuary.
When it comes to having a communion service as part of your wedding ceremony, I would suggest that just the bride and groom participate with the minister. If you have a small group of guests you could probably include them if you want, but I personally like the idea of only the bride and groom participating in communion.
I also suggest using the self-contained communion plastic cups with sealed grape juice on one end and a small piece of communion bread sealed at the other end. You can find these at any Christian bookstore or church supply store. One brand that makes these is called TruVine, and they make them in packs with as little as 6, and you get them from Concordia Church Supply.
During a wedding ceremony, communion fits best just after the rings are exchanged and is appropriate for either just the bride and groom, the bride and groom and their children, or if you have a small family and you want to include them, too.
