Last Sunday when we were in John 9 we saw from verse 3 that the blindness in the man happened to him not because of any kind of sin or punishment but so “the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:3).

In John 6:27-28 we read “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 

We know that our sinful nature has brought disease and illness into our lives, because we are a fallen people. We look forward to the day when Jesus raptures us out of this world and our sinful humanity is replaced with immortality. When we consider John 9:3 and John 6:28 it becomes apparent that the “works of God” is us believing in Jesus Christ in those circumstances.

When we are the one in the illness or trial or whatever the problem we are facing, it is a test and opportunity for us to turn toward our Lord in belief and dependence. It is by going through tough issues that we become a witness to our Lord and that work of God leads others to believe in Jesus Christ.

When we are a family member or friend of one going through the tough things of life it often causes us to consider how we would take it if we were the one going through it. We also find that as a loved one deals with a tough issue we are face-to-face with a need turn to Jesus for strength in coping or in prayer for comfort and to believe in Jesus Christ, which is the works of God.

Whatever the circumstances of illness, disease, heartaches, broken relationships, accidents, trials, sufferings, grief, or any number of things that become unwelcome parts of our lives because of our fallen sinful nature, as an observer or the very one going through it, let us then be part of the “works of God” and believe in Jesus Christ.
