Guard Your Heart
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23 NIV
Somewhere in college I heard a professor say that humans can only maintain 12 healthy relationships. Relationships beyond 12 people are going to be superficial, on the acquaintance level, and not really deeply connected. Likewise, when it comes to our topical interests, hobbies, and activities, there is only so much we can do well before we become a meaningless generality. We call this being a jack of trades and master of none.
This is why the Bible tells us to guard our heart and be careful how we allow its pull of attraction to lead us. The person who stays disciple enough to fix their mind and energy on a single aim is going to be the one who touches more lives for the better. That’s a person who recognizes they have a calling, not just a job, a purpose, not just an obligation, and a heart worth guarding.
